✈️ Mega Project Funding Secured! Chinese Bank Pledges $500 Million for Bishoftu Airport 💰
Hello Aviation and Investment Watchers!
We have major news regarding the financing of the ambitious new international airport near Bishoftu, Ethiopia!
Mesfin Tasew, CEO of the Ethiopian Airlines Group, has confirmed that a significant financial commitment—half a billion U.S. dollars ($500 million)—has been secured for the mega-project’s construction from a Chinese bank. The CEO refrained from officially disclosing the name of the bank.
📈 Growing International Interest
Speaking to media on the sidelines of the African Investment Forum in Rabat, Morocco, the CEO stated that this commitment underscores the increasing interest from international financial institutions in the project.
“We are talking with several financial institutions in all parts of the world—Middle East, China, India, Europe, and North America—and the response we are getting from the lenders is positive,” he explained.
💵 Project Scale and Private Sector Role
The new international airport, which will be constructed near the city of Bishoftu (Debrezeit), is projected to cost an estimated $12.5 billion USD. This total cost covers land acquisition, resettlement, and financing expenses.
Crucially, it is expected that approximately $8 billion USD of the total cost will be financed through the private sector, highlighting a major public-private partnership opportunity.
This initial major pledge is a fantastic first step in securing the massive capital needed to build what is destined to be a world-class aviation hub!
